Blue Prototype are a self-described jazz-metal group from Richmond, Virginia hell bent on proving that jazz is not elevator music. Drawing inspiration from such dissimilar artists such as jazz trumpeter Miles Davis and Norwegian black prog-metaller Ihsahn, their music combines traditional jazz elements (think swing feels and improvisation) with heavily distorted guitar and a dark harmonic pallet. Like the influences, the compositions of guitarist Connor Thompson reflect a number of seemingly incongruent elements, from the straightforward metal groove of "Integrity", to Afro-Cuban 12/8 in "Warrior", uptempo swing in "Avalanche", and the dizzying array of meters and feels in the quirky "A Clear and Definite Purpose". And yet, the tunes flow together rather naturally, unified by the aggressive attitude, harmonic content, and improvised approach.
